Malarkey Cup 2008

Greetings, fellow members, I hope your summer has been a good one.  Fall is almost here and with it comes the 2nd annual Malarkey Cup to be held on October 3-5, and our annual membership meeting which will be held towards the end of October at a date to be determined.

For those of you who played in the inaugural Malarkey Cup tournament last year, you will soon have the opportunity to be the first to sign up and be guaranteed your place on the roster.  For those of you who did not participate last year, the Malarkey Cup is a two day intra-club tournament exclusively for our golf members.  The tournament is so named to honor our former head golf professional and an icon in Tennessee golf, Don Malarkey.  The format will be Ryder Cup style with two 18-hole matches (Four Ball in the morning and Alternate Shot in the afternoon) on Saturday, and conclude with 18 hole individual matches on Sunday.  We will form two teams (Green Team vs. Gold Team) divided equally by handicap.  Each team will compete for the right to be the Malarkey Cup Champions.  Your entry fee will also include a pairings party on Friday evening for you and your spouse with drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a sit down dinner for you and your spouse on Sunday evening in the ballroom following the conclusion of play.  Space will be limited and this event will sell out quickly so don’t hesitate to sign up.  Contact the Pro Shop for more details.

The Silver Club

At Edinburg, on the 7th day of March 1744, several “gentlemen of honor, skillful in the ancient and healthful exercise of the golf” applied to the magistrate and council of the city for a Silver Cup to be annually played for on the Links of Leith.

The Silver Cup competition is the first recorded event to be established among a society of golfers and constitutes the origin of the oldest golf club, the Honorable Company of Edinburgh golfers. With the exception of the years 1746-47 and 1832-35, the Silver Cup has been regularly played for down to the present time – first on the Links of Leith, then at Musselburg and finally at the Honorable Company’s present home, Muirfield.

A procession was staged on the morning of the competition, announcing by bagpipe and drum, the splendid event, and bearing the Silver Cup to the playing field at Leith.

Silver Cup Competitions are a rich part of golf’s heritage, having been copied at St. Andrews, Musselburg, and later at Carnoustie and Troon.

In keeping with the finest traditions of golf, and in honor of our Head Professional Emeritus Don Malarkey, we celebrate the Malarkey Cup Matches.

We invite you to be a part of this special event. Please call the Golf Shop to sign up.Entry Deadline is September 25, 2007
